Response 1 Juvenile probation is the most used method of disciplinary action used in the juvenile justice system. It is a judicial disposition under which youthful offenders are subject to certain conditions imposed by the juvenile court. The youths are permitted to remain in the community under supervision of a probation officer. Probation is considered a desirable alternative to institutionalization because it allows offenders to retain freedom while providing society with some protection against continued disregard for the law. It also promotes the rehabilitation of offenders because they can maintain normal contacts in the community by staying at home, going to school, and taking part in community activities. The word “probation” can be defined as: a judicial disposition under which youthful offenders are subject to certain conditions imposed by the juvenile court and are permitted to remain in the community under the supervision of a probation officer. So when referring to probation in the juvenile judicial system, this word is utilized in at least four ways: (1) a disposition of the juvenile court in lieu of institutionalization, (2) the status of an adjudicated offender, (3) a subsystem of the juvenile justice system ( terms most common used), and (4) the activities, functions, and services that characterize this subsystems transactions with the juvenile court, the youthful offender, and the community. When looking at the pros and cons of juvenile probation, the pros are that it allows the juvenile to stay in their community but also enforces the protection against the community from the continued disobey of the law.
