It is a judicial disposition under which youthful offenders are subject to certain conditions imposed by the juvenile court. The youths are permitted to remain in the community under supervision of a probation officer. Probation is considered a desirable alternative to institutionalization because it allows offenders to retain freedom while providing society with some protection against continued disregard for the law. It also promotes the rehabilitation of offenders because they can maintain normal contacts in the community by staying at home, going to school, and taking part in community activities.
